Ophelia

                       The image I have chosen to discuss is Ophelia, by Gregory Crewdson. The reason I have chosen this image to discuss is primarily due to my friend Adria informing me that the four images presented to the majors were the ones we were supposed to discuss, and also because of the image itself was very captivating.

                        The image depicts what seems to be a living room knee deep underwater with a woman lifelessly floating in the center of the room. What’s really interesting about this image however is the color scheme. When looking at the water we see that it is murky and non-transparent.  For me as an individual I find deep water or non-transparent water gives me anxiety and makes me nervous. It’s possibly form the idea that anything could lie beneath. Add onto the fact that a woman is now seemingly dead and floating above it like a goldfish that was underfed gives the water a dark and almost morbid feel to it.

            At the same time, the walls and furniture are almost a jaundice-y yellow color as though they have been rotted away or have begun decomposing. What was once a family home and living room is now rotting and decaying away. The idea of a family home lost.

            But perhaps the most interesting is the look on the woman’s face. She seems almost peaceful in death. It is as if she felt no pain as passed on.  She is also depicted wearing a white nightgown. With this I feel there are many underlying tones that could be drawn.  Perhaps she passed peacefully in her sleep, or maybe this disaster in her home is relaxing. I think all these messages and the aesthetic quality of the image make for a very interesting piece, which is why I chose the image.

"If I had to pick one I'd have to say it's when I got engaged."

"I'd add more doctors to the world. I think there are a lot of people who are sick or hurt and not enough doctors to take care of them."

"I guess I'd say London. I really like the way they talk and I think the vibe is kind of like New York. So I could spend the rest of my life in London."

-What has been the happiest moment in your life thus far?

"Well I'm in a sorority so for me it's when I got my big! It's like an older sister, mentor or someone to help me. Someone I can get to and look up to for advise." 

Color Critique: Denise, Ashley

I just took a look at Ashley and Denise's photos and I think they were very successful. The most successful photos that they took, in my opinion, were successful because of the broad contrast in each image. And the subject matter of their images were very concise making it easier for me to see their photos as a series of one another.

My favorite of Denise's was the last one that showed what looked to be a keychain or metal links of some kind. Perhaps it may be my slight bias towards metal luster or mechanical images but I thought that was her most successful and interesting image.

My favorite of Ashley's photos was her image of what looked like a jar with an image of two children playing. There was a great amount of contrast in the image that was still subtle enough that it wasn't distracting. At the same time the positioning of the jar as well as the aperture's size add on to the overall concept.

So it looks like a tie between 9 and 10 which is actually funny because the way I see it 9 was the very sorrowful and cynical one whereas 10 was the optimistic and romantic one. And to be honest, I always feel conflicted between being outstandingly cynical or fantastically optimistic. I'm fairly proud of my results. 9 and 10 in first, 1, 3 and 11 in second, and 7 in third. So here's how I see it...1) Cynical and optimistic (Does that make me a realist??) 2) Scientific, eccentric, and childlike 3) Intellectual and eccentric.

Well I'm pleased with the results from this fun little test. Good way to spend about 15 minutes, for me anyways. Good night all. Til next time.

New Years Resolution

As is the way of people at this time I've decided to make a new years resolution. My new years resolution, however, is less resolution and more resolutions. Plural. So here is a list of my demands for the year of 2012. Demands I make for myself anyways.

1. Work on abs - Yes I know this is cliche, but I've been losing weight quite a bit this year so I'm going to try and focus a bit more on my abdominal region. 

2. Visit more bars - Understandably this would put a dent in resolution 1 however I find I life's a bit more tolerable with a bit of alcohol in my system. If I find a better way to deal with my problems then that can take this resolutions place ha

3. Wear more suits - Ok I'll be honest here; I'm being influenced by way too much television. The Tenth Doctor from Doctor Who, Barney Stinson of How I met your mother, and just the general debonair look of a suit period has me really wanting to wear them more often. I just want to look more professional and adult I suppose.

4. Get a better job - There are different definitions for a better job; Better paying job, A job I can forever be happy with. I'm looking for one that is both. Now for me that would mean becoming the famous artist I've been dreaming of, and lets be honest, it is fairly difficult. That being said, I'd be content with a job that I can wear my suits in that would give me enough money for my dream, single lifestyle.

5. Get my own apartment - Now I know this is difficult to maintain, ESPECIALLY with my current job, but it's a dream I've had for myself since I graduated high school. Now I'm not looking for my dream single apartment just yet, but I at least want to try for it. In this case I'm at least looking for a decent sized apartment with at least a flat screen television (doesnt have to be big), with good wifi, AT&T Uverse as I have it now, and a good area where I can paint.

6. Have more Adventures - I find I spend way too much time relying on my friends, Netflix, Work etc. for entertainment. My daily routine tends to be in environments that I've likely seen the day before. I find that sad. It's sad because I may reach a point in my life where I wont be able to just go out and have fun (Just going or doing something I've never done before) so I want to try and do more of those things this year.

Ok so maybe my resolutions are a bit demanding and ridiculous, but that's what life is isnt it? It's demanding and ridiculous. But life's good when it happens in a way that you can have fun with. It's GREAT to just reach for your dreams and its BRILLIANT to have them within your grasp or even come true. So maybe my list is a bit ridiculous, but it's how I imagine I'd be having fun this year so I'd like to at least give it a try. If it turns out that it's not actually what I wanted I'll make a whole new list and try for that. Ha
